Harbourfront Centre’s First Annual Chess Fest

On Sunday June 15 from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm, Harbourfront Centre’s First Annual Chess Fest presented by Scotiabank and co-hosted by Annex Chess Club and Chess Institute of Canada takes place on over 10,000 sq. ft. of the North Exhibition Common. This free all-day event will feature chess activities for the whole family.

Young chess enthusiasts will enjoy playing on the 3 life-sized chess boards, have free face painting, and receive chess crown hats; free chess lessons by Canadian Women’s Champion and Women’s International Master (WIM) and Olympiad team member Natalia Khoudgarian, or Women’s National Master Yelizaveta Orlova and International Master (IM) Artiom Samsonkin, both formerly on the Canadian Olympiad Team.

Watch world-renowned Hans Jung, Canadian master, play five opponents simultaneously while blindfolded. Mr. Jung has given more than 100 blindfold exhibitions over 40 years, including playing 26 boards simultaneously. Mr. Jung wants to train someone younger to ensure his legacy lives on: "I need a candidate who is willing and enthusiastic to discover a love for blindfold chess, someone I can mentor and support in an exciting career of blindfold simultaneous exhibitions." Could your child be the next blindfold Master?

The event will also feature simultaneous chess against Canadian Champion Grandmaster (GM) Bator Sambuev. GM Sambuev is the top-rated Canadian and he will play 16 opponents at the same time. There are still spots available for this amazing event!

The 2014 Toronto Blitz Championship will be held at Chess Fest with a top prize of $1,000. Up to 50% of the proceeds will help the Canadian Chess Olympiad team compete against 170 countries this August in Norway.

Kids and adults can learn about the history of Canadian Chess Olympiad teams at the dedicated booth created by local chess historian Erik Malmsten.

For more information, visit the Chess Institute website: www.chessinstitute.ca and the Annex Chess Club website: www.annexchessclub.com. If you or your children are interested in participating in the blitz tournament or either of the simultaneous exhibitions please register here.

Chess Fest is the first of its kind in Toronto and is not to be missed. All are welcome.
